Sots-Art Manifesto (1972–3)
Sots-Art was founded in the early 1970s by Vitaly Komar and Aleksandr Melamid in the USSR. The aim of Sots-Art was to create work that interrogated the link between state-sanctioned Soviet realist art and underground art deemed anti-soviet by the authorities.
Deploying Western pop art techniques Sots-Arts produced work that parodied the state propaganda machine and which critiqued the double-think that this generated in the Russian people where public statement and private belief were often at odds.
